Abhinaya in association with BEMAC presents Abhinaya Festival 2019 on Saturday, May 11 from 4.30pm – 9.30pm at the Queensland Multicultural Centre (QMC).

Expressions of Indian Classical Dance

Abhinaya Festival 2019 features the performances of finest quality Indian classical music and dance by the leading exponents. Parshwanath Upadhye, leading Bharathanatyam artist and recipient of Sangeeth Nataka Academy Yuva Puraskar 2017 will present a traditional Bharathanatyam concert.

Kumar Gandharva Awardee-2017 Kapila Venu and Sandra Pisharody will present Mohiniyattam concert. Sudev Warrier, who has specialised in the music for dance and disciple of Padmabhushan Dr Balamuralikrishna will lead the live music ensemble accompanied by Brisbane’s own senior musicians and instrumentalists. The festival will also feature performances by Brisbane’s artists and students of the respective forms.

“What surprised me most was the huge emotional impact of this exceedingly foreign (dance) form. Ms. Venu’s eyes watered from effort. I learned later that their redness was from a dye. Yet she gave a sense of herself behind the characters, feeling their sadness. Even if this was all artifice, she made that sadness felt.” Brian Seibert about Kapila Venu in New York Times, Sep 2012

“…and this little girl did miracle, she was so restrained, so poised and so much herself, there was a self presence in her, which is a rare phenomena” – renowned art critic Manjari Sinha comments about Sandra Pisharody’s dance at a recent Delhi concert

“the much-in-demand Bangalore based Bharatanatyam dancer Parshwanath Upadhye has been dazzling audiences with his virtuosity, the geometry of the Bharatanatyam technique translating into visual delight in this dancer’s leaps and immaculate lines” – renowned dance critic Leela Venkataraman writes about Parshwanath Upadhye
