Watch the incredible journey of The Last Pig …
For more than ten years, pig farmer BOB COMIS raised pigs on his farm to be sent to slaughter. Believing he was providing an alternative to factory farming, he provided a humane life for the pigs – the pigs were free to frolic in mud, roam over endless acres of rolling hills, and munch on corn grown onsite. But throughout those years, he would often suffer from what he calls a “series of crises of conscience” in which he would question the morals and ethics of raising animals for slaughter, leading him to turn his life inside out, risking all to stop the slaughter, and eventually planting a garden instead. The film follows Comis’ last year raising pigs, and examines ‘humane farming’ and the disconnect between people and what they eat.
The Last Pig captures Bob finding absolute joy in caring for these sentient beings.
“Each of these pigs, if I could only ask them in a way they comprehend, would choose to live rather than die.” ~ Bob Comis.
The Last Pig is a lyrical meditation on what it means to be a sentient creature with the power to kill. Deeply immersive, through intimate musings, the farmer reveals the growing conflict of a life spent “peddling in death”. It is a celebration of life, courage, compassion and human change.
The film invites viewers to consider their own beliefs … and the cost their choices have on others and the environment.
The Last Pig will help propel the shift in society’s relationship to non-human beings and will demonstrate our capacity for compassion.
