Singout Sista: Meninas da Lua (Moon Girls)
BEMAC Presents Singout Sista: Meninas da Lua (Moon Girls)
Meninas da Lua is burst of colour, the joyous sound of women singing, folkloric dances from the deep roots of Afro Brazilian culture, exotic, polyrhythmic and trance inducing rhythms that are beaten out on drums of all sizes, on triangles, shakers and agogo bells. Featuring the powerful, deep voice of Priscilla Rios, the Meninas da Lua (Moon Girls) is a 12 piece feminine percussion, voice and dance collective, bringing the meaning and strength of this rich culture as a social transformer for respect, unity, love and generosity.
The Meninas pay homage to the traditional African infused music from the North East of Brazil; like the Coco, Maracatu, Afoxe and Samba Reggae rhythms. The Coco is originally a dance performed by run away slaves in their ‘Kilombo’ villages. Traditionally they would throw a Coco party, wear wooden sandals and perform a high energy dance to pound the earthen floors of their huts. The lead singer often improvises the words of Coco songs, whilst the chorus repeats a simple phrase. The Meninas sing the traditional songs and perform the dances as they play the percussion with great respect, love and authenticity.
An uplifting and high-spirited show not to be missed.
*The Singout Sista Series showcases amazing world music from amazing world women.
